We’ve told you before that after April 2016, no more cruises are set to sail from the Bayport Cruise Terminal. That’s when both Princess and Norwegian Cruise Lines leave the terminal empty.
That’s a major blow for the port. Costing more than $100 million to construct in 2008, it sat largely empty until a couple of years ago. Now, with no more cruises on tap, it looks like it will return to being empty. In the meantime, the port has been losing millions each year thanks to operating costs and extremely generous deals for the cruise lines to lure them to the port.
KPRC in Houston recently did an investigative report into the cruise terminal, how much it is costing taxpayers, and what alternative uses the Port of Houston is considering. According to KPRC’s report, the port has never been profitable since it has been completed. And it looks obvious that officials don’t like to discuss that.
